How to Add or Remove Top Menus for Vanilla Forums

Version 2.2.1 of Vanilla Forums and below. Posted per the Vanilla Forums GNU General Public License terms.

You may find you want to change your top menu by adding, deleting or re-arranging your menus. We did this in our custom-made theme, which is a recommended practice. We don’t recommend to ever edit default core files for any script you work with.

Below, we use yourtheme for the name of the theme. Substitute that for the actual name of the theme you made.

  1. Create a custom theme. (this is very easy to do so don’t be intimidated by the sound of it)
  2. Once you have your theme, open the themes/yourtheme/views/default.master.tpl file in your favorite editor. (We use either Brackets, Notepad++, NetBeans, or Komodo)
  3. Find the menu code starting around line 13
  4. Add your own menu items where the list starts. For our site, we added external links like this:

We put our links in to open in a new window but you don’t have to do that if you don’t like it. Just remove the target=”_blank” from the code you see.
  5. Load the file to your server in themes/yourtheme/views/ and rename the current file (this is a precaution in case you don’t like your changes).
  6. Now check your site. If it’s as you like it, perfect! If not, go back and tweak.
